The Birnam Oak— tree of legends

  • Birnam (by Dunkeld), Perthshire
  • at the Birnam Institute
  • Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th July 2008
  • A newly-expanded two-day course for all players, tutored by LYNDA COFFIN (flute) and LAURENCE PERKINS (bassoon)

Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th July 2008

This very popular course has been expanding, and by popular demand it has now been made into a two-day course for all players, tutored by LYNDA COFFIN (principal flute in CBSO, RPO and Ulster Orchestras) and LAURENCE PERKINS (soloist, and principal bassoon in Manchester Camerata). Each day there will be large-ensemble music directed by the tutors, and smaller ensemble sessions with shared tuition, giving players the chance to take part in small and large scale chamber works.

Music planned for this two-day course:
  • Bach Brandenburg Concerto No.3
  • Beethoven Battle Symphony (‘Wellington’s Victory‘)
  • Nielsen Wind Quintet
  • Mozart Divertimento movements

These programme details are to be confirmed, and the full programme of music will depend on the numbers and combinations of players taking part. FINAL BOOKING for this course will be on Saturday 7th June - after this, the final course programme and other details will be decided, and an information sheet and parts for practice will be sent out approximately three weeks before the course date.

COURSE FEE for the two days: £95 per player

Exploring the area . . .

The River Tay at Birnam

Birnam is an excellent centre for explorations of all kinds. Famous for its Shakespearian links (the ‘Macbeth Experience’ Centre is nearby), there is also the part-ruined Dunkeld Cathedral, walks along the River Tay (perhaps across Telford’s bridge), and the Beatrix Potter Garden. A short drive away you will find the beautiful city of Perth, Scone Palace, Blairgowrie, Glamis Castle, Pitlochry, Aberfeldy (a chance to sample the local whisky) - and of course the beautiful Scottish hills and paths.
